KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 (Bernama) -- UMNO, with 11 ministers in the current federal government have worked to give their best service to address the problems of the people, said several members of the country’s administration.

According to them, generally UMNO ministers are good and most of them try to play their roles in helping the people especially during the country’s recovery and transition phase from COVID-19 pandemic to endemic.

UMNO vice president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid stressed that UMNO ministers have been playing their roles effectively in their respective ministries in delivering service and assistance to the people during the country’s transition following the outbreak since 2020.

“I think the statement of UMNO deputy president was inaccurate, we know what we are doing. I am also Rural Development Minister and I know the narrative the people want, maybe his speech was out of context, “ said Mahdzir after officiating the corporate exhibition of his ministry at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

Mahdzir was commenting on the speech of the UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri General Assembly joint opening by deputy president Datuk Mohamad Hasan who said the performance of UMNO in the government did not show any confidence expected, but admitted that some attempted to do their level best.

The federal government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, which was formed on Aug 2021 is a coalition government comprising - Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak - with 32 ministers and 38 deputy ministers.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Tan Sri Nor Omar did not deny the achievements of UMNO ministers were marred by the ‘unconvincing performance’ as the current government consists of a coalition government.

“If seen as weak, we may be tarnished (with unconvincing performance) but I would not agree that the government today is weak as we saw in the Johor and Melaka state elections, it was clear that UMNO contributed tremendously to the people,” he said.

Meanwhile Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister, Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin admitted some government leaders from the coalition did not meet the performance as expected.

He said the government administering Putrajaya now is a coalition government, as such an evaluation of performance and comparison could not be made as the tempo of work among leaders themselves are different.

"Bersatu has the Bersatu way, UMNO has the UMNO way and maybe some did not perform (unsatisfactory), but we admit this is the situation with a coalition government.

"Looking ahead, if the people see that the coalition government is not performing well, maybe he will vote for one party. That is up to the people in the next election," he said.
